It's summer. It's typical in the summer that people get exhausted more easily. The heat can be enervating, as well as the sun shining on us. If you feel yourself getting more tired and exhausted in the next couple months, just know that you're not alone. There's a purrfectly reasonable explanation and it has to do with the weather. That's why Mediterranean climates tend to have a slower paced lifestyle. Places like Greece, Southern France, Italy, and Spain all have something in common, and that's the feeling that there's no rush to your day to day. That's why the siesta exists.

A siesta is the tradition of taking a long nap in the middle of the day, typically after your lunch. The sun is out, you just ate a bunch of delicious food, and you're feeling too tired and full to continue your day right now. Why not take a break and nap? It's not a matter of laziness, it's really beneficial to us. Studies have shown that short naps can improve alertness, mood, and cognitive performance, which explains why so many people instinctively crave a little rest in the afternoon. There's also something so cozy about a siesta. You can sleep off the lunch you just ate instead of powering through the work day with a bloated belly. You can feel like a person again, and that's a beautiful thing.

And let's not forget that cats love to sleep too! They love their nap time, and you best believe they're also taking a few hour siesta in the middle of the day. If we truly worship cats, then why not follow in their footsteps and do a little nap with them? Here's to siestas.

I wish we followed the Latin tradition of siestas. I get tired so easily, and especially in the middle of the day. I would gladly shove a sandwich down my throat and and skip my lunch break for the opportunity at sleeping instead. I rarely get a good night's sleep, so it's really important that I take an afternoon nap. The structure of work these days makes little sense, and it feels like some Boomer lie, but that's a different story. Every workplace should have a nap room. And to be honest, why not? Why do they care if I sleep for thirty minutes so that I can be more productive later? It's actually beneficial to them! But they don't care!
